An Aussie blend of Cabernet, Merlot, and Shiraz Aussie Peter Lehman jumped into the Barossa wine business in 1979. With little understanding of fiscal realities, he contracted for 10,000 tonnes of grapes without having a real plan for what to do with them. Friends, family, and business associates rallied to the cause and raised much-needed funds to house and process the fruit. Peter and his partners got a lucky break when Hoffmans, an established winery, was put up for sale. His primary investor bought it, and Peter and his wife, Margaret, bought the block next door and built the house Margaret lives in today. The original plan was to process fruit and sell it to other companies as bulk wine. This worked well until the bulk wine market collapsed in 1982. Peter’s solution to this new crisis was to join what he called the “glass jungle:” bottling wines and taking them to market under their own brand. Clancy’s Red is a pure Barossa wine: a collaboration of winemakers and growers who believe in making honest wines that punch above their weight. A blend of Cabernet, Merlot, and Shiraz, this wine is soft, supple, and full of juicy flavor. It has a warm plum and blackberry preserves nose with hints of menthol and black pepper. The medium-bodied palate is simple yet well made and balanced with a good amount of expressive fruit supported by soft tannins and finishing with a refreshing lift.
